Duncan Bootcamp
Welcome to this week's edition of Memory Lane. I am going to 'cheat' a bit this week. I am busy closing out my WordPress blog so I thought I would use some of those over here. Feel free to join in and share your memories with us as well!!
My memory this week comes from the period of my life when my husband was deployed. I was pregnant with #4, I had bid him farewell at Fort Bragg, NC and then moved my 3 young children to Iowa to be close to family while living through our first deployment while pregnant. It ended up not being very pretty. This is what I blogged about March 13, 2007:
I always wondered if military boot camp was ever going to benefit me after exiting the military. And sure enough, it did!! I began the Duncan Boot Camp last week Monday. It was sorely needed since my children had experienced another transition in their young lives. The difference here was mommy. Mommy was not with it, and mommy was not being very solid glue for holding together three small children during times of trials. Mommy was wallowing in self pity and exhaustion instead of placing her concerns and struggles at Christ's feet.
So mommy called daddy to quit. I mean quit being a mommy all together. But daddy and mommy talked up a plan (it's what daddy's are really good for, especially the Bid Daddy in heaven). The plan was for Duncan Boot Camp. Coddling the children through the transition was not the proper answer. They needed my love, but they needed my mental presence and my stability also. So every moment of every day was dictated by mommy. The children wake up early, are fed, clothed, teeth brushed, allowed two PBS toons, and straight into schooling. After schooling comes lunch, then exercise time. The nappers nap right after lunch and afternoon activities begin after napping is over. All poor behavior is immediately addressed and good behavior is rewarded.
It may sound harsh, and going through boot camp in January of '98 was extremely challenging!! However, with my young children it has provided for them exactly what they needed. Structure in a world that is ever changing.
Reflect for a moment on your own life. Are you in need of spiritual boot camp? Are you allowing yourself to be blown and tossed by Satan along the sea of worldly passions? Does this leave you feeling shaken, scared, unsure of your future, distressed? Of course it would. God does not wish for you to flounder along in life with no one at the wheel. Give God the authority to command the rudder of your life. Allow Him to guide you, to structure your pell mell life. Find security in His Holy plan for you. Once you ask Him to beat Satan off you and to keep Satan from telling you lies, you will find the peace of God's structure in your life. It comes at a cost, but His Holy peace is worth it eternally.
Matthew 11:28-30 28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy, and My load is light."

I remember that... it might be helpful for context if you note that I was deployed at the time and you were playing the role of single parent.
ReplyDeleteGlad you worked it out and your beautiful children are such a blessing to you! Thanks for sharing this memory.
